Woman attacks roommate and sets him on fire over a plate of spaghetti and meatballs

Melissa Dawn Sellers of Clearwater, Florida, was placed in police custody after an act of extreme domestic violence. It is alleged that Melissa became upset after finding that her roommate, Carlos Ortiz Jr., had thrown out her meal of leftover spaghetti and meatballs.

The conflict resulted in her dousing him with nail polish remover and setting him on fire. A friend of the victim, Ines Causevic, describes his condition in gruesome detail.

“When he got up, his face was like melting off, it was pink and sore,” said Causevic. “His lips were burning.”

The man was rushed to Tampa General Hospital, where he is in critical condition with burns to his face, chest, and shoulders.

This isn’t her first run-in with the law either. She was previously charged with assault and armed robbery in May of last year. She was released in January, her court file declaring that she “posed no danger to the community.”

Woman gets stuck in chimney trying to break into house of man she met online

A woman identified as Genoveva Nunez-Figueroa became trapped in a chimney after a foiled break-in attempt. The woman became wedged eight feet down the pipe while attempting to break into the home of Lawrence Fernandez, a man she’d met on an online dating site.

The fire department worked tirelessly for two hours to remove the woman from the chimney’s tight embrace, disassembling it to extract her. Apparently this was not the first time she’d been to the home or the first time she’d even been on that roof.

The home owner had gone on a few dates with the woman but broke things off when he found her on his roof one night. (Good call.) She has been arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary. Her family has offered to pay the damages, begging that he not press charges.

Woman first charged under Virginia’s new anti-revenge porn law

The law, which went into effect July 1, makes it a class 1 misdemeanor to, with intent to coerce, harass, or intimidate, maliciously distribute a sexually explicit image of another person without their permission.

An Augusta County, Virginia, woman, 28-year-old Rachel Lynn Craig, has been charged after she allegedly posted the naked photo of her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend on Craigslist.

Police Sgt. Brian Edwards reports that the target alleges the image was taken from her boyfriend’s phone after she created it and texted it to him.

Craig stated that she posted the image out of anger at the target, whom she considered a romantic rival.

In 2014, bills were introduced or are pending in at least 28 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Legislation has been enacted in Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Anti-revenge porn legislation has been introduced in Japan and Brazil. Israel classified revenge porn as a sex crime in January 2014. The Australian state of Victoria tacked it on to existing sexting laws. Laws are in place addressing intimate images and privacy in France and Germany. The Philippines had a law in place in 2009 criminalizing photo and video voyeurism.

Adobe takes stand against bullying; bullies blame #GamerGate, attack Adobe

On October 20, Twitter user Leopirate tweeted @Adobe, sending screenshots of Gawker writer Sam Biddle’s hate speech and calling for Adobe to pull its ads.

Adobe responded with a statement dissociating themselves with Gawker and denouncing bullying:

We are not an advertiser w/ Gawker. We asked Gawker to remove our logo. Adobe stands against bullying.

Along with the statement was a link to The Bully Project, an anti-bullying social action campaign with increasing participation and a goal of using education and community involvement.

The tweet garnered an immediate and widespread response. Many posted messages thanking Adobe for their stand against bullying.

Gawker’s outraged followers presumed the message to be support for #GamerGate, despite there being no mention of the movement. They flooded Adobe with messages ranging from baseless and hysterical to harassing and threatening, some users even bragging about their theft of some of Adobe’s software in response to the presumed slight.

Established media sources have tried to spin the story as they have tried to spin #GamerGate in the past, writing about an entirely different movement than the one actually taking place, and Gawker published an article calling GamerGaters fascists and their own former advertisers craven cowards, and blaming everyone but themselves for the consequences of Biddle’s public attack. Writer Max Read, author of the diatribe, even used the word “integrity” like he has some kind of a clue what it means.

Read, coincidentally, wrote the article that was the starting point for a massive hysteria campaign spanning Gawker’s main blog, its feminist Jezebel blog, and reddit.com’s subreddit Shit Reddit Says. That campaign ultimately resulted in a public media attack on violentacrez, a well-known redditor, for being asked to help keep illegal images out of subreddits being protested by social justice warriors. Gawker writer Adrien Chen publicly doxxed violentacrez, the sole supporter of his family, leading to a harassment campaign that cost him his job.

So let’s get this straight: attacking an hourly wage worker supporting a disabled spouse and kid was just fine and dandy, but consumer outrage over dishonest media practices is fascism!

Welcome to 1984, folks. And here we thought we’d entered the 21st century.

Kenyan romance tourism
In Mombasa, Kenya, where many locals are poverty-stricken, a booming industry is emerging. The industry is romance tourism. Aging European women go to exotic locales to engage in paid liaisons between them and young attractive local men.

They shower the men with expensive gifts, a place to stay, and, most importantly, cold hard cash. Some women are upfront about the sex, while others want to play up the fantasy, pretending that these men are actually interested in them romantically.

The men play along, often in hopes of finding citizenship in Europe or even just a better life for themselves. But here’s where the insanity comes in. Many of the women report feeling heartbroken and victimized after finding that their paid escorts aren’t interested in anything more than money.

Even crazier is the double standard on full display. When men seek out these kinds of relationships, it’s seen as sleazy and degrading to women. When women hire prostitutes, they are seen as victims and at times even empowered for doing so.
The men of Mombasa are not alone. “Romance tourism” is well established in many exotic destinations with impoverished locals, and most notably in the Caribbean. Remember, folks, when men hire prostitutes, they are using them, but when men are the prostitutes, well, they are still somehow using women.

A Nebraska middle school defends the “purple penguin” gender-inclusivity training guide

A middle school teacher who passed out gender-inclusiveness training guidelines to her colleagues states that it was meant to start a conversation and not a war. The controversy arose from the handouts suggesting that students be referred to with gender-neutral terminology, reaching levels of ridiculousness that went viral.

Suggestions for gender-neutral terms were things like “campers, readers, scholars or even purple penguins,” and to avoid saying boys and girls. The teacher’s well-meaning attempt at inclusivity read as insanity comparable to that of Sweden’s gender-neutral classrooms with non-gendered pronouns.

The predictable backlash came from parents feeling that the school had no place in redefining gender, or in going this far to appear inclusive. They felt that instead of being informed, their children we’re being indoctrinated.

Though some of the backlash was religious in nature, many of those concerned parents felt that such discussions were more appropriate for high school aged students than for young children.

The handout asks teachers to consider whether a classroom configuration will create a “gendered space,” asking teachers to provide accommodation for special pronouns, and to avoid referring to any behaviors as normal. Gee, I can’t imagine why the parents would be upset at all.
