Dan Perrins on hunger strike in Ontario

D

To raise awareness of men’s mental health, Dan Perrins just spent five days walking 120 km (74.5 miles) from from Hamilton to the Ontario legislature. He has also provided the legislature with a letter which included a very short list of demands, and has now begun a hunger strike with the goal of having the legislature address them.

In other words, Dan isn’t asking for anything more than equal application and enforcement of existing laws.

Two twitter hashtags, #hungerstrike and #IStandWithDan are being used to support and spread awareness of Dan’s efforts.

For anyone interesting in helping Dan, wareness of his campaign can be demonstrated to Parliament members by contacting them to ask what is being done to address his demands. Information on how to contact your representatives is available on the website of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Contacting news outlets such as CBC Toronto and The Rebel can also help draw attention to the cause.

  • It took him 5 days to walk from Hamilton to Toronto? That doesn’t sound right when I was younger I did it in a few hours.

    • From what I’ve seen on video, Dan also talked to people about his cause, including police officers. Stopping to do that may have slowed him down a lot.

      • I didn’t run that’s for sure. I could stop at every city hall from Hamilton to Toronto and take Lakeshore Ave and it wouldn’t take 5 days.
I’m not trying to attack it’s just sounds strange from someone that grew up in Hamilton and lives in Toronto.

        • I know it can be done, but then I’d have to not pay attention to other things like putting up stickers, talking to individuals and city halls and rest for Jeb as well as myself. Add to that about 30 pounds of weight in my pack.
The point was to raise as much awareness as possible which means stopping to talk to people, which takes time.
I also went as far south as Hutches on the beach.
They put up the 1-page poster for me. That required me explaining it. Multiply that many times over through the 5 cities.
          This was not a race.

          • Okay well that makes more sense. From the article I got that you just walked from point A to point B. Stopping to sell the roses and enjoy the places makes more sense. Thanks for clarifying and good luck!

  • I have tried contacting Barbara Kay for help but i was unsuccessful . She could help to get the story out since she rights coma for “National Post” in Canada .

  • Has anyone started a change.org petition to the government, essentially echoing his words? If so, we need to try to get as many signatures on it as possible, so the legislature sees that a large amount of individuals stand behind Dan Perrins and his goals.

  • Thanks for the update Hannah. FYI, the link “has now begun a hunger strike…” is broken, “Not Found. Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn’t here.”

One would hope hunger strikes would not be needed just to get government to apply existing laws equally..

I also wanted to say, and I know it’s easy for me living outside of Canada to encourage Canadians to do more to help Dan, but given that male disposability is probably a key part of this problem in the first place, a male on a hunger strike by himself might succeed, sadly, in proving the point that government is not going to pay him attention, so I wonder if any female Canadians can join him, even partly, even temporarily, that would be great.

Anyway I second what others said already about being proud of Dan’s work and also his needing to take care of himself, so nothing happens to his health. Best wishes to Dan!

    • That’s kind of what I’m worried about, too. Non-violent protests can work. Sometimes. But only if you’ve already established a high level of public sympathy and a strong public presence.
